Now that we’re knee-deep into menu planning, let’s talk recipe conversions! We all have go-to meals that we love, right? If you are open-minded (and you are, we are doing Whole30 because we value our health more than what is “comfortable” or “easy”, right?), then most recipes can be pretty easily converted to a meal that Whole30 friendly. Before we get into converting recipes, let’s talk a little about attitude.
Have you stopped and given thought to the reason you are doing Whole30? It’s easy to jump on the let’s-get-healthy bandwagon without stopping to take the time to analyze your reasons. Why am I doing Whole30? Because I am 42 and could potentially have more children, I do what I can to maintain good health. After doing some research, I realized that Whole30 addressed my personal nutritional goals (cutting sugar and soda), as well as naturally eliminated most of the kids’ food allergens. In other words, family life with food was about to get easy again. Hop on over to our FB group and share your reasons for doing Whole30 with us. Accountablilty is a wonderful thing, friends!
What are your favorite go-to meals? Chili frito pie is a regular occurence around here! In its normal form, it is inexpensive, taste-bud pleasing, and fills the tummy. Obviously, while doing our Whole30, we can’t have chili frito pie in its normal form. Beans (in the chili), fritos, and cheese are all no-no’s. Instead, I make up some chili (without the beans) and pour it over oven-fries. We top it with gluten-free nutritional yeast. The kids love it! No, it’s not chili frito pie, but it is yummy in its own right.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with flavors and try something new! One night, after picking up a bulk produce buy, I was too tired to give dinner much thought. I decided to take the produce I hadn’t yet rinsed and put away and use it for dinner. I browned some ground beef and onions, then added in fresh tomatoes, yellow squash, and zucchini. This is a pic of the meal in progress.
I was careful not to overcook the squash and make it squishy. The kids loved it!
